NCC Turnaround Project

Developing the Service

Turnaround has always had the vision of expanding the service it provides to work with more
young people. The original Turnaround vision was inspired by a young teenage girl’s story which
challenged Newquay Christian Centre to be taking a more proactive lead within the community to diminish poverty associated with housing need.

The Turnaround Project opened its doors in January 2004, now with over five years experience of providing a high quality service for young people, Turnaround are expanding their services to work with young women and provide move on accommodation for its residents.

In September 2007, in partnership with what was formerly Restormel Borough Council, Turnaround purchased a grade two listed Wesleyan Hall for Turnaround Young Women and Move-On. The building is situated on the same road only a few metres away, making it the ideal location geographically to the existing site of Newquay Christian Centre.

The Wesley Hall is very run down and needed substantial refurbishment. In March 2008 Turnaround started fund raising for the development of the site and secured nearly half a million pounds from Communities and Local Government Places of Change Programme. The dream has now become very much a reality. However, Turnaround continues to fundraise for other costs included in the development of the site and for the revenue funding required to run the new projects. If you feel you can help financially with these developments please Contact Us or see ways in which you can Get Involved financially.

Young Women

The service in the young women’s project will be a reflection of the existing young men’s project, providing housing related support, for example, in the areas of cooking and budgeting. However, it
will aim to incorporate specific needs such as eating disorders and self-harm, which although can affect young men are prevalent in young women.

Turnaround Young Women’s Project will provide a safe secure environment in which young women can explore possibilities for their own lives in the areas of education, employment and training. It will enable them to work through life controlling issues and gain autonomy over these areas. Turnaround Young Women’s Project will give young women the opportunity to discover their strengths, gifts and talents and to develop them accordingly.

The service design will be person-centred, tailored around the specific needs of young women, recognising their unique contribution to society. It will be a place where women are treated with respect and value, rebuilding the self-esteem and self-efficacy of young women, which may have been diminished due to negative past experiences.

Turnaround Young Women’s Project will meet the need by providing small and specialist provision where currently little or none exists as there is limited provision in the single female only supported accommodation sector in Cornwall. Sole current provision exists in Truro, which has to service the whole County, with the exception of Refuges for women fleeing domestic violence.

Move-On

The new move on facility will be comprised of five self contained units, where residents who have graduated the Turnaround programme from the Young Men’s or Young Women’s Projects can feed into. Here they will access a low level floating support service which will ease them into independent living making the transition between supported housing and independent living easier thus reducing the risk of relapse.

This is a very exciting season for the Turnaround Project and our aim is to continue to meet the need for young people across the county who are experiencing poverty associated with housing need, giving them an opportunity to change the direction of their lives.
