Sports & Activities

Turnaround launched its Sports and Activities Programme in Spring 2006 as a weekly sports session run by a volunteer. During this time Turnaround saw the value in clients having the opportunity to “have a go” at sports or activities they have never tried before. A direct correlation emerged between the amount of sport and organised recreational activities clients participated in and greater achievement in their own personal development programmes. This led to Turnaround fund raising to purchase sports and activities equipment such as surfboards, wetsuits, football, cricket, fishing and basketball equipment for clients to use. The funding also provided three hours of organised sports and activities sessions per week run by a member of the staff team.

The Sports and Activities Programme is to encourage clients to engage in sports and gain healthy life styles. Turnaround recognises the benefits that sports and activities have on a person’s wellbeing and self-esteem thus helping them to achieve and progress in other areas of their lives.

As Turnaround develops in the future the Sports and Activities Programme will be an integral part of its service, maximising on Turnaround’s location in the “Surf capital of Europe”, the outstanding Cornish coastline and all that it has to offer. Turnaround would like to see clients progress through the Housing Related Support Programme and Sports and Activities Programme into vocations such as surf coaches and lifeguards. 

Dartmoor

Turnaround aims to run a residential trip once a year to take its clients out of their comfort zones and into the great outdoors! The last two years we have taken clients to Dartmoor for an outdoor activities weekend away. This included climbing, abseiling, canoeing, raft building, hiking and camping. These activities give clients an opportunity to try activities they may never have had the opportunity to experience before; to push themselves physically and mentally and build a sense of team and camaraderie between clients.
